DMX Dead at 50

Rapper DMX has died at the age of 50.

The hip-hop legend – real name Earl Simmons – collapsed at his New York City home from a heart attack brought on by a substance overdose on Friday, 2 April. He was taken to a nearby hospital and placed on life support.

DMX’s family flew in on Friday, 9 April, to be by his side, and made the final decision to turn off the machines as per the doctors’ grim prognosis of recovery from his coma.

A statement was released the same day, announcing that the “X Gon’ Give It to Ya” hitmaker had passed away.

It also paid tribute to DMX, calling him “a warrior who fought [until] the very end”, who “loved his family with all his heart”, and “inspired countless fans across the world and [that] his iconic legacy will live on forever.”

Aside from a string of hits in the late 1990s – such as “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” – and releasing eight studio albums in total, he also dabbled in acting, notably starring alongside Jet Li in the films “Romeo Must Die” and “Cradle 2 the Grave.”

A memorial service will be held once more details become available.
